Dear Friends here we go with an update on a great week end that took place on the 28th-30th of June at the SEPANG INTERNATIONAL CIRCUIT where I was invited by NOEL BECKER to share the wheel of his Radical SR8 with a 3.0Lt engine, a beast of 480HP / 770Kg.
I had never driven a Radical before and apart form a brief test with Noel's Lambo a few years ago I had never raced in Sepang circuit and I came from the longest inactivity period in my career.
The Car was amazing and I immediatley loved it's lightweight chassis and it's great torque and it's user friendliness given it's incredible performance. The 6 gears paddle shift gearbox felt great and the handling was very good.
What I found as the weak point of the Radical are the breaks that are not really working according to the other parts probably also due to the tube Chassis that tend to make the break balance to move, more than in other race care, in a significant way depending on the weight distrubution change due to Fuel amount or Circuit areas downhill or uphill.
The Malasya Supercar Series has a line up of very good drivers that include Kiwi driver Earl Bamber, former Formula BMW Winner (in front of a Riccardo now F1 Toro Rosso driver ) Asia V6 Championship runner up and A1 GP podium scorer. Also Denis Liam who scored Pole Position with his Juno is a former A1 GP driver with great knowledge of his home track as he is from Singapour and oftern works for the local tv there and does many road car tests. Another great driver in the series is Rodolfo Avila, Macao's leading driver that has a Asian GT Championship under his belt driving the Ferrari i drove of Mastercar.
Also a girl is among the leading pack, Natasha Setter has been racing in most of single seater Championships in Asia and has got now a drive on the PCCA driving a Porsche.
All drivers are young and motivated but ofter are paired to less experienced drivers making the race for the win a gamble with surprises.
Cars are mostly Radicals and Junos but a Wolf is expected to join in the next two Rounds 15 September and 1st of November making it for the tube made chassis almost impossible to compete with the Italian made by Avelon Carbon monster.
On my first outing with the car I mostly worked on the set up but we did not manage to find a good compromise of the Qualifying and Race therfore our performances in terms of absolute speed where not as expected but we are going to have a new Chief Mechanic entry for this race coming directly from Ferrari-Michelotto, Jakie Giancon a former head Mechanic in F1 will make sure our car is going to be in perfect conditions to make Noel and Luca score another great result.
Will write an update after the next race in September, the deal is that if we do well and we did well Noel will help me in my 2014 Le Mans 24hrs Sponsor Champaign.
